*******Shoemaker’s Story*******

Noticed this street cobbler for a few weeks before the charity MeriOrSe decided to support him with some tools to up his business. In the pretense of getting a shoe repaired I had a chat with him and the very first point he mentioned was “ my life was much better when my Mom was alive”. So true to any being on earth, who else can look after us better than a mom.

He only has a handful of tools and is at his little shop all day long even in very hot weather reaching 40 degrees. His day starts with visiting a couple of places of worship before starting work. From my interaction he sounded to be contended with what he is earning. He felt happy when we offered to purchase the needs for his business.

On the day of purchase, we were expecting a long list and when we went to bazaar he only wanted a few tools and didn’t want any thing extra. Asked him many times if he wanted any thing more ,a shelter to cover his shop, more polish brushes and any thing that is needed for his business. He just responded saying whatever purchased are enough and won’t need more.

He wasn’t greedy and didn’t want excess even though he didn’t have to spend a penny. Nice to see people like him working hard and happy with whatever he is making.
End of the day learnt that happiness is all about how contented one lives with the situations of life.

*******vs Mosquitoes *******

Mosquito are a major problem in our areas. An old age has a dormitory with no mesh/ protection from mosquitoes. As part of efforts to support the needy, MeriOrSe has arrange a mesh door for this dormitory so that the old people can have a good night sleep.

*******Winter Floors *******

Homeless who sleep along Godavari Bank are provided with floor mats.

*******Winter Floors Orphanage *******

A lot to write about the plight of these kids who are in welfare hostels. Food, shelter and school education are taken care by Government but are very basic that you wouldn’t want any kid to go through that. So many welfare schemes, wonderfully presented on paper are as thin like paper when it comes to implementation.

Support 70 kids living in a welfare hostel with mats so that they can brace winter floors.

Common Issues

***** Scars of the Mountains *****

On my solo trip along Himalayan villages, I had to trek through a good number of mountains filled with so much of greenery, tall Devadar trees, waterfalls, Clouds almost at a touch distance and “Plastic” ! Yes, PLASTIC !

More than the spectacular views and stunning beauty what remained in my mind is the long stretches of plastic waste competing with the stretches of waterfalls. These lines of plastic looked like the “SCARS of Mountains”. And it was really a sorrowful sight to see plastic everywhere on those serene mountains that stood so innocent suffering the acts of ignorant Humans!

My activity along the trek was to write “No litter” signs on the big visible rocks I came across and also to pick up the plastic bottles, tie them to a rope and drag them down to the mountain to dispose off.

Some travelers didn’t understand what I was doing, some laughed, some clapped and a few started to pick the plastic as a gesture of support to what I was doing.

I wondered if each individual starts clearing up at least 5 bottles they see along their trekking paths, picnic spots, parks, public places it may not create a huge change but will make a difference that will create a noticeable impact down the line.
We Humans often boast of civilized culture but if we start ignoring these Scars of Mountains, it will be no time before we get pushed in to the dead end of human life on this planet.
